DALLAS – A Muslim charity and five of its former leaders were convicted Monday of funneling millions of dollars to the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the retrial of the largest terrorism financing case since the attacks of Sept. 11.

U.S. District Judge Jorge A. Solis announced the 108 guilty verdicts on the eighth day of deliberations in the retrial of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, once the nation's largest Muslim charity.

Holy Land was accused of giving more than $12 million to support Hamas. The seven-week retrial ran about as long as the original, which ended in October 2007 when a judge declared a mistrial on most charges.

Holy Land wasn't accused of violence. Rather, the government specifically said the Richardson, Texas-based charity financed schools, hospitals and social welfare programs controlled by Hamas in areas ravaged by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The U.S. designated Hamas a terrorist organization in 1995 and again in 1997, making any contributions to the group illegal, even those to Hamas run social service organizations in the poverty stricken Palestinian Territories.  Interestingly, the US government, the EU, the UN and Israel make contributions to the social service organizations and programs run by Hamas.

Incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama are dampening the postelection glow of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America.

From California to Maine, police have documented a range of alleged crimes, from vandalism and vague threats to at least one physical attack. Insults and taunts have been delivered by adults, college students and second-graders.

There have been "hundreds" of incidents since the election, many more than usual, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate crimes.

One was in Snellville, Ga., where Denene Millner said a boy on the school bus told her 9-year-old daughter the day after the election: "I hope Obama gets assassinated." That night, someone trashed her sister-in-law's front lawn, mangled the Obama lawn signs, and left two pizza boxes filled with human feces outside the front door, Millner said.

She described her emotions as a combination of anger and fear.

"I can't say that every white person in Snellville is evil and anti-Obama and willing to desecrate my property because one or two idiots did it," said Millner, who is black. "But it definitely makes you look a little different at the people who you live with, and makes you wonder what they're capable of and what they're really thinking."

_Four North Carolina State University students admitted writing anti-Obama comments in a tunnel designated for free speech expression, including one that said: "Let's shoot that (N-word) in the head." Obama has received more threats than any other president-elect, authorities say.

_At Standish, Maine, a sign inside the Oak Hill General Store read: "Osama Obama Shotgun Pool." Customers could sign up to bet $1 on a date when Obama would be killed. "Stabbing, shooting, roadside bombs, they all count," the sign said. At the bottom of the marker board was written "Let's hope someone wins."

_Racist graffiti was found in places including New York's Long Island, where two dozen cars were spray-painted; Kilgore, Texas, where the local high school and skate park were defaced; and the Los Angeles area, where swastikas, racial slurs and "Go Back To Africa" were spray painted on sidewalks, houses and cars.

_Second- and third-grade students on a school bus in Rexburg, Idaho, chanted "assassinate Obama," a district official said.

_University of Alabama professor Marsha L. Houston said a poster of the Obama family was ripped off her office door. A replacement poster was defaced with a death threat and a racial slur. "It seems the election brought the racist rats out of the woodwork," Houston said.

_Black figures were hanged by nooses from trees on Mount Desert Island, Maine, the Bangor Daily News reported. The president of Baylor University in Waco, Texas said a rope found hanging from a campus tree was apparently an abandoned swing and not a noose.

_Crosses were burned in yards of Obama supporters in Hardwick, N.J., and Apolacan Township, Pa.

_A black teenager in New York City said he was attacked with a bat on election night by four white men who shouted 'Obama.'

_In the Pittsburgh suburb of Forest Hills, a black man said he found a note with a racial slur on his car windshield, saying "now that you voted for Obama, just watch out for your house."

Emotions are often raw after a hard-fought political campaign, but now those on the losing side have an easy target for their anger.

"The principle is very simple," said BJ Gallagher, a sociologist and co-author of the diversity book "A Peacock in the Land of Penguins." "If I can't hurt the person I'm angry at, then I'll vent my anger on a substitute, i.e., someone of the same race."

WASHINGTON - President-elect Obama's advisers are crafting plans to close the Guantanamo Bay prison and prosecute terrorism suspects in the U.S., a plan the Bush administration said Monday was easier said than done. Under the plan being crafted inside Obama's camp, some detainees would be released and others would be charged in U.S. courts, where they would receive constitutional rights and open trials.

Calling It Early

I'm taking a chance here, and at 10:27 PM EST, I'm "calling" the Presidential Election for Barack Obama, whom I predict will finish with more than 300 electoral votes to win the election! (270 needed to win).  I'm not aware that any network or news station has "called" the election yet.

This is indeed a great change for America.  It is more than change, it is a rejection of the politics of fear, the lies, hatred, bigotry, racism, intimidation and right wing militancy that has been so overwhelmingly present in this campaign.  Americans have stood up and told McCain and Palin that America rejects the politics of fear and hate, that we are ready for hope and optimism, we are ready to improve our country instead of staying on the same path, of enriching our lives and our children's lives by turning this country around, restoring the economy, and regaining respect in the worldwide community.

Pittsfield, MA (AHN) - A defrocked Catholic priest who used to serve as pastor in two Troy parishes has been charged with the rape of two boys in the 1980s.

Gary Mercure, 60, allegedly raped a boy in Great Barrington in 1986 and another boy in New Ashford in 1989. The victims are now 33 and 32 years old, respectively

Mercure, ordained in 1975, was removed from the holy orders in January, while serving at the Sacred Heart and St. William parishes in Troy. Diocesan officials laicized Mercure in August.

Mercure was indicted with three counts of child rape and one count of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14.

A pastor at two Schuylkill County churches was arrested Thursday on charges of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl, state police said. The Rev. Alan R. Sienkiewicz, whose age and address were not available, was charged with aggravated indecent assault and related offenses.

Sienkiewicz was pastor at Christ Independent Church in Lavelle and Grace Baptist Church in Ashland.

After deliberating for more than three hours, a Travis County jury this afternoon found a former South Austin pastor and apartment complex handyman guilty of multiple felony counts for sexually molesting three boys in 2005 and 2006.

Rodolfo Sosa, 50, was convicted on all counts against him — five counts of indecency with a child by contact and one of indecency with a child by exposure. He faces up to 20 years on each indecency by contact charge and up to 10 years on the remaining charge. Senior state District Judge Jon Wisser will sentence Sosa Nov. 21.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Detectives said there were more victims and more than a dozen new suspects worldwide in a suspected sex abuse ring operating out of a former Northeast Portland church.

Police think that the commune operated in the mid-1990s, involving at least 80 people living in four Northeast Portland homes.

The investigation started in 2007, when two young girls walked into a Central precinct station to report they had been sexually abused between 1998 and 2000 while they and their families attended “The Peach House” ministries in Northeast Portland.

A Daphne pastor was arrested Wednesday after a quarrel at his home, police said.

The Rev. David C. Harrison faces a third-degree domestic violence charge, according to Daphne Police Capt. Daniel Bell.

The 45-year-old pastor of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church on Main Street was arrested about 7:45 a.m. Wednesday after his wife suffered an injury to her hand and called police, Bell said.
