On the subject of the campaign to raise legal funds for the defense of Stanislav Shmulevich, the ex-student at Pace University who was charged with and confessed to committing two hate crimes, we see posts like this on the usual sites that defend hate speech and hate crimes:

Does any one know how to set up a defense fund?
I think we need to set one up to help this guy and his family fight this and cair. If nothing else, we can get the courts to look at the quran and sunnah to see why rational people hate it and why muslims do what they do and of course, get cairs money out in the open again.

Many of you have asked how you can contribute to/help the defense of Stanislav Shmulevich, the former Pace University student being charged with felony hate crimes for putting copies of the Koran in a campus toilet on two occasions last fall.
Charles Johnson at LGF has an update:
The latest news on the Stanislav Shmulevich Koran-dunking “hate crime:” Mr. Shmulevich now has a legal team, and two LGF members are on it. His defense is being prepared.
The team intends to act pro bono (without charge to Stan), but in any case like this there will be substantial legal expenses unrelated to the attorneys; so they are also planning to set up a transparent fund to receive donations from interested parties. When that’s established I’ll post more details.
The same day that Charles Johnson started this “campaign”, with the support of Michelle Malkin and Robert Spencer, I posted a warning as an update to the original story about the hate crime at Pace University, found at http://hatewatchhallofshame.blogspot.com/2007/07/bigots-anger-going-down-toilet.html
I warned readers that Shmulevich has been assigned Public Defenders from New York Defender Services, which the state supplies at no charge to the defendant. I also explained that, on the slim chance LGF is being honest, or even partially so, “pro bono” attorneys are free, no charge whatsoever to their client. This mysterious, unexplained “legal expenses unrelated to the attorneys” is an oxymoronic phrase, since legal expenses in this case would be related to the work of the attorneys, and nothing else. On that basis, it seemed like a scam. I also explained that if and when a private attorney is retained, the first thing that private attorney must do is notify the court that he is now the attorney-of-record for the defendant (Shmulevich), and that, as of the date of my last report on this, no private attorney had filed a Notice of Appearance. LGF claimed that Shmulevich “now has a legal team, and two LGF members are on it” and started soliciting funds for the “legal expenses unrelated to the attorneys” on 7/31/07, more than a month ago. Yet:
As of 9/1/07, here is the docket record on this case: http://www.hddweb.com/95376/WebCrims_Schmulevich_docket_report_as_of_090107.pdf
As you can see, Shmulevich still is being legally represented by Public Defenders from New York Defender Services. No private attorneys, no change whatsoever in attorneys.
Feeling duped yet? How much money did you contribute to LGF for Shmulevich’s legal defense? Feeling like an idiot? Feeling ripped off? Feeling like Charles Johnson should be the one facing a judge?
